Whenever we think of Pop music, one name comes to our mind-
Azam Khan, the Guru of Pop music in Bangladesh. We call him ”Pop Somrat”. The
legendary pop singer passed away on 5th June, 2011, but he is still
alive amongst the music-lovers of Bangladesh. We will never forget this
generous artist.
I, personally have two different memories about him. At the
age of 9, I first listened his legendary song “Bangladesh (Rail liner oi
bostite)”. From then its became my favorite song. When I was 14 years old, me
and some of my friends were about to form a band. I was selected as the
vocalist. When I was tested and I tried with my favorite song of him, one of
the judges, Aminul Vai told me “Do you know, whom song are you singing?” I
replied ”Azam Khan”. He said “Songs are sang from heart, not from your lungs.
Learn to sing until you can do that. Then become the vocalist.”
From then to till now, I learned a lot and felt how Azam
Khan sang.
Second experience was touchier. It was our college
“Fresher’s day”. Azam Khan was invited there to entertain us. He was honored
with a gold me`dal by our principal. At first, he sang with normal voice, but
after sometime music got him. He opened the buttons of his shirt off, recalled
his magical tone and sang “Bangladesh”. I can still visualize the picture and
feel the emotion of that tone.
Today, I’m here to share my tribute to this legendary pop
singer. I’ve decorated this post with his last interview to media, View of one
of his band members, some renowned songs and with
some memorable photos of him.
BIOGRAPHY:
Azam Khan (February 28, 1950 – June 5, 2011), full name Mahbubul
Haque Khan, was a Bangladeshi pop singer, primarily known for popularizing
pop music in Bangladesh. He founded a band called Uchcharon (meaning
"Enunciation") in the early 1970s. He is honored as “Guru of Pop
Music” in Bangladesh. Khan, together with pop music contemporaries Fakir
Alamgir, Ferdous Wahid, Firoz Shai, Najma Zaman and Pilu Momtaz
is credited with pioneering and popularizing Bangla pop music in the years
immediately following the country's independence.
He was a Freedom fighter in Sector 2 under late Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf
and fought against the Pakistani army in the Liberation war of Bangladesh in
1971. After the war, he introduced an energetic brand of music. His first
concert in television was broadcasted in 1972 in Bangladesh Television. His
popular tunes included "Ore Saleka, Ore Maleka", "Jibone
Kichhu Pabona Re", "Ami Jare Chaire", "Ashi Ashi
Bole Tumi", "Obhimani", "Rail liner
bostite", "Hei Allah Hei Allah Re", "Alal O
Dulal" etc.

Khan's Last Interview
Azam Khan, the pop legend who had been ailing from cancer, passed away
on June 5, 2011. Earlier, after having been diagnosed with oral cancer, the
singer went to Singapore twice and had undergone chemotherapy and tomotherapy.
But Khan didn't complete the full
course and returned to the country. Cancer spread all over his hand and body,
resulting in his sudden collapse. Renowned artiste Sabina Yasmin and her husband,
singer-musician Kabir Sumon, visited Khan just a few months ago at his
residence in Kamalapur. Khan was looking confident to stage a recovery and come
back to the music scene to entertain millions of his fans once again. But fate
had other plans. The void the “Pop Guru” has left is irreparable. I was there
when Sabina Yasmin, Kabir Sumon and noted cultural personality and lawmaker
Asaduzzaman Noor visited Azam Khan and managed to speak to the ailing artist.
This is the last interview (to my knowledge) given by Azam Khan to the media.
The interview was taken on March 27, 2011. Excerpts from the interview:
Azam Khan: “After the surgery, I'm feeling quite well. Initially I was
unable to talk, but I'm feeling better now. The song aired on 'Ityadi' (after
treatment) has been a moral booster for me and hopefully after completing the
follow up, I will stage a comeback and sing once again for the people of my
country.”
On being called “Guru”, the singer
said, “I really felt embarrassed when the
guitarist of my band first called me by this name. His name was Rocket. One day
he started calling me 'Guru' and I objected right away. But he continued
calling me 'Guru'. Gradually it caught on and everyone started calling me
'Guru.' I'm used to it now.”
Reminiscing his days on the battlefield,
the freedom fighter said, “When the
(Liberation) war broke out, my father told me that if I go to the battlefield,
I'd have to come back only after the nation has been liberated. I took it as a
challenge. His words encouraged me a great deal on the battlefield.”
When asked to compare the
independent Bangladesh with the pre-1971 state, a frustrated Khan said, “I would not have taken part in the war had I known this is
how it'd turn out. Before independence, Bengali politicians were not corrupt;
they were inspiring figures. Pakistanis tried to marginalise us in every way
possible. So, the war was inevitable. But is this what we fought for? We had a
vision of a state that would uphold the rights of every citizen. Has that
happened?”
His views on the current music trend
in Bangladesh?
Azam Khan: “The longevity of songs' popularity is on the wane.
Listeners can no more remember a particular song even after listening to it
repeatedly. Maybe it's just me, but back in the day people were more passionate
about music. We did not create music just to earn money, but rather to
entertain the audience and make an impact on them. Our music was able to
connect with the audience. These days, musicians are becoming more dependent on
technology. Moreover, if music doesn't reflect the lives and views of the
people, it's only logical that it'd fail to create a lasting impression on the
listeners.”
Reflecting on his own music, Azam
Khan said, “Whenever I sang a song, I took my
country and the listeners into consideration. I've yet to find my dream song.
I've not yet recorded my best song.”
Regrets?
Azam Khan: “No regret at all. I've been bestowed with immense honor
and love from the people. I'm 61 now and if I die, I'll have no regret. I
fought for freedom, tried to inspire the youth to stay away from all evils
through my music, and in return received love from everyone. I have two
daughters and a son. All of them are students and I'm proud of them. When I
walk down the streets, people recognize me and call me 'Guru'. They ask me
about my well-being and shower me with their blessings. Why should I have
regrets?”
When asked why he hasn't cut music
albums of late, Azam Khan replied,
“I've been working in the music industry for the last 40 years. I've seen many
singers come and go. But I'm not done yet. My last album was released in 2009.
I would've released an album this year had I not been unwell. However, I'm
devoted to music despite everything. It's true that music companies prefer
younger artistes but if my songs have a demand in the market, they will release
my album as well.”
When I was about to bid adieu to the
iconic singer, with a smile on his face, he said, “Try to be happy. If we all try to be happy, the world will
smile on us and Allah would bestow his blessings on everyone.”

It was early ‘70s, a singer with a
difference emerged in the music scene, from his tunes to lyrics, hair style and
body language, music presentation and use of instrument, everything seemed new
to the listeners.
Never before the audience knew songs
with such straightforward lyrics as “Alal o dulal/ Tader baba haji chan”, “Ore
Saleka, ore Maleka/ Ore Fulbanu parlina bachate” or “the legendry Rail lineer
oi bostite/Jonme chilo ekti chele”.
With his unique style Azam Khan
became an icon of the youth.
Today we see that band music is
ruling the music scene. This is not something which has been achieved in just a
day. Late pop guru Azam Khan paved the way for today’s band music with his hard
work.
On 5 June, with the demise of pop
guru Azam Khan, the music-lovers of the country witnessed the end of an era.
Famous percussionist and band member
of the band Renaissance, Kazi Hablu one of the closest companions of Azam Khan
shared his memories of Azam Khan.
When asked about Hablu’s early days
with late Azam Khan, Hablu takes a trip down memory lane. “I used to play Tabla
from my school days. Following our independence we the young generation, let it
be music or anything else, always wanted to do something different.”
“After watching an English movie,
Tarzan, I was highly motivated to play percussion which is a western
instrument. I was introduced to Azam Khan by Firoz Sai. When the legendry band
Uchcharon was formed I joined the band as the percussionist. I was really
fortunate. From here Azam Khan accompanied me in my every single step,”
continues Hablu.
“In my eyes Azam Khan is the
simplest person I have ever seen. Even during his heydays Azam Khan was among
those who used to lead a life of simplicity. He never ran after name, money or
fame,” adds Hablu.
“Throughout his life Azam Khan have
sang for the masses. If one looks into his music, he/she will surely notice his
songs to be realistic and emotional. He was a freedom fighter who fought not
only for the Motherland but also for music,” Hablu says.
“A singer like Azam Khan will never
be born again; generations may come and go but songs of Azam Khan will stay in
the hearts of the common people as long as Bangla music exists,” Kazi Hablu
states.
The whole nation is now paying a
tribute to Azam Khan but when he was alive have we shown proper respect to him?
Hablu replies, “Azam Khan is known
to us as the Pop legend but I think he deserved lot more than he received from
us. It is really a wonder that Azam Khan did not have even a car of his own. He
even had to struggle for releasing one of his audio albums in 2009, but love
from people was something which he has constantly received during his
lifetime.”
Kazi Hablu concluded his
conversation saying Azam Khan the ‘Pop legend’ will always live in our hearts.
